Well, once again, Donald J. Trump has received a “Target of Investigation” letter from Special Council Jack Smith. Trump, as reported in the Washington Post:
Smith informing him that he is the target of the Justice Department’s investigation into efforts to overturn the 2020 presidential election that culminated in the Jan. 6, 2021, attack on the U.S. Capitol
Here’s something you might need to know, or may be asking. What’s a ‘Target Letter’?
A target letter from prosecutors means investigators have gathered substantial evidence linking the recipient to a crime, but it does not necessarily mean charges will ultimately be brought.
Trump, after receiving the “Target of Investigation” letter, of course went to his Truth Social. Trump revealed what he called
“HORRIFYING NEWS for our Country.”
Trump further said the DOJ’s special prosecutor had
“effectively issued a third indictment and arrest,”
Plus, calling Smith
“deranged.”
“I am a TARGET of the January 6th Grand Jury investigation,” he declared, noting that the Justice Department has given him “a very short 4 days to report to the Grand Jury.”
This is an investigation which Special Council Jack Smith began 8 months ago when he was appointed by Attorney General Garland to head up this investigation. To Trump’s dislike, Smith has been relentless in his investigation, expanded his investigation as he has seen fit, and is letting the different Grand Juries decide on the indictments, if any, should come from the investigations.
Garland, when he assigned this task to Smith, gave him full control of the investigation. Garland has made no effort to slow walk Smith in any way, that I can tell, and this is what has Trump so steamed.
Trump jumped into the 2024 Presidential race way last year, at least 6 to 8 months ahead of anyone else. Now, I’m not a politician, by any means, nor do I desire to ever be one. But, that’s a bit early to me, and, seems to me that if a person knows he’s facing decades in prison, numerous federal, and state, investigations as well as indictments for crimes he knows he’s committed, jumping into a presidential race might be the smart thing to do.
Let’s examine this just a second. Trumps thoughts are that if he’s campaigning for President of the United States, then he must be exempt from being indicted. WRONG! Trumps thought process might have led him to believe that if he’s busy on the campaign trail, talking to the sheep’ supporters of his, which are sending him all their hard earned money to fight the legal battles, pay his lawyer bills (which he has had to pay millions and millions up front), then he will be able to postpone all of these court appearances, legal battles, until after the 2024 election in November, 2024.
Well, his attorneys have ask Justice Cannon (appointed by Trump in his first term) to postpone the Mar-a-Lago Documents trial until well after the 2024 election in November 2024 because their client doesn’t have time to prepare for his defense with them due to him (Trump) being away campaigning for President of the United States. This excuse might work with Justice Cannon, because she has, in previous proceedings which dealt with the Federal Search Warrants, shown favoritism towards Trump, because he appointed her to her Federal Court Bench. Now, if she rules on this in Trumps favor, I look for Smith, and his attorneys he has assigned to prosecute this case, to immediately ask for Justice Cannon to recuse herself, and I look for them to file an appeal to her ruling.
I have been in courtrooms where the defense attorneys filed motions for continuances because their client was working, and couldn’t have time to take for the trial at that time. The judges response was quick, and very to the point. “I suggest you inform your client that he take the time to take care of these charges. If he’s not in this courtroom at the next hearing, he’ll be where we know he can attend, until after the trial is over. Are you understanding what I’m saying to you?” At this point, the defense attorney says he fully understands. What this meant was the judge was going to issue a bench warrant for the client if he failed to appear in court, have him arrested and held without bail.
Back to Trump, and his legal problems. He’s facing quite a bit, as we know. Trump has been indicted by a federal grand jury in Miami and a state-level grand jury in New York City, making him the first former U.S. president ever charged with a crime. He and his advisers are also under investigation by the Justice Department over efforts to overturn the results of the 2020 presidential election, which as I’ve explained above, he’s just received the “Target of Investigation” letter. The district attorney in Fulton County, Ga., is leading a parallel criminal probe related to the 2020 election. We also learned the past few days reporting, investigations have also began in Arizona, and Michigan, for Trump and his associates attempted interference with their respective states 2020 elections.
In each case, Trump has denied wrongdoing.
Hold on folks, this is fining to get really good, and most likely complicated!
More to come!
