What is going on in this country? A lot is going on at many levels and to start off, there has been an undercurrent of resentment of people of color, immigrants that are here legally or not. To corrupt Woodie Guthrie’s song this land is my land and it is not your land if you are African American or an immigrant from countries other than the Caucasian nations. Do not underestimate the fear and hatred and acts of violence many citizens condone in the name of keeping this “ our country “. ( white and Christian) Racism is the big driver in the MAGA movement.
Income inequality and the vanishing full time job with benefits, that have caused the American dream to fade away. The future is not bright for many people and they want to blame someone. They want a leader who promises safety, security and prosperity. Never mind that the former president did not actually do what he promised. The right words alone are enough to win their vote.
The rebel voter feels that nobody is helping them. They have been carefully taught that the government, run by the deep state, gives away their tax dollars to undeserving masses of people, who are too lazy to work. Their education came from GOP and media stars like Rush Limbaugh, Sean Hannity, and an entire network that dispenses disinformation daily. The resistance to the civil rights movement is alive and growing. Now not only the media but the SCOTUS is on their side. They see overturning Roe v. Wade as their greatest victory so far. Gutting the voting rights legislation, is a step in the right direction, because some of them believe that “ those people” should not be allowed to vote.
They are at once fearful, angry, hateful, and prone to violence. They gleefully support a demagogue who says what they think. They don’t like the direction this country has taken since the New Deal and even the Civil War. If our democracy dies their reaction will be that a fascist government will bring good things, to the right people. People like themselves. They don’t care about our constitutional government because they never really learned about it and they never liked it anyway. We have a giant problem on our hands.
Jack, I truly appreciate your dialogue. You have pretty much nailed it!
I spent my career in law enforcement mostly, as you are probably aware, and I can tell you first hand, racism is alive and well in this country. And, sadly, until the adults in the room accept race, color, religious beliefs, as all being in this country as wanting to live a free life, and try to prosper, then the younger people of this country will never accept it.
The adults in the room teach the children, the children then carry on and the cycle repeats. Like a washing machine. Wash, rinse, repeat!
In my career I was involved in gang units, and numerous undercover operations that involved different races, religious groups, etc, and it’s really surprising what these kids learn when an adult sits them down and makes them actually talk to each other. A lot of times we actually hit thrugh to dine if these characters that a black, or Muslim, or Mexican, was just another human being. Not something to use as target practice.
Daniel, You raise an important point. We all live in the same country and somehow we must reach out and finds ways to get along. Someday this will happen and let’s hope it is in the near future. Right now, it seems far away.
Absolutely correct, Jack. I hate bringing it up, but this country was built on Immigration, by immigrants. Mostly which back in the day came over through Ellis Island, and other was came west coast ports. So, in reality, other than the Indians who were in this country, living off the land in thus country, for hundreds of years, everybody in this country is an immigrant, one way or the other. Everyone in this nation has ancestry from another country.
So, my suggestion to everyone is simple.
“Get over it. Learn to live with everyone, like a nice, cohesive human being, it get your damn ass out of this country!”
Personally, my lither and dad worked the farm every day of the week. I was raised by a black Wonsan. Her name was Jenny. We used to talk all the time about racial issues, racism, racial inequality. And thus was back in the late 50s, and all through the 60s. When I hit married the first time, I made sure Jenny and her husband Frank sat right up front with my family. There wasn’t any sitting at the back of the church for any of them.
I was a Methodist, and my bride to be was a Baptist. When we went to the pastor if my church and talked to him about our wedding, having it at the church, and him officiating the ceremony, he I turned me quickly that there would be no blacks allowed to attend. If they did, they could wait outside, or if it was raining, wait in an adjacent building until after the ceremony was over.
I left the church because of that. We went to her church and the pastor there was happy to marry us, and said everyone was welcome inside his church. He informed me that the Baptist Church there was the peoples church. Everyone was welcome, and could sit where they wished.
