Just love reflecting on the history of this magnificent sculpture, the sonnet that invites those yearning to be free to our shores. Relates so well to past history as so many of our ancestors were processed through Ellis Island coming to America. I have ancestors whose names are recorded there of whom two married into the Cherokee tribe. With the current chaos on beaches in Florida and the four states bordering the Rio Grande, I am heartbroken at the invitations’ loss of reality as we push back needy immigrants many times assuming the worst about their motives to find asylum here in the USA. Climate change, conflict in South America, loss of food crops, the razing of the Amazon Rain Forest, surely we can find solutions to the negativity surrounding immigration today. I think the clearest opposition is to the import of precursors for the deadly Fentanyl and the drug itself. We have not given immigrants credit for the many jobs they perform that our elitist citizens seem to believe too menial for their own hands; housekeepers, crop pickers, dish washers, etc. These people are so greatful for a chance for a new life; they are willing to work without complaint which cannot be said of many who are “birther” citizens. While the Statue is incredibly meaningful and historic, many times I wonder if she does not now send false hope as our governance fights to push back immigrants rather than accept them and utilize their talents. I want documentation of “rapists, criminals, drug mules, murderers” before I believe these desperate families should be deprived of lives on our soil. They would not willingly leave their homes and cultures if desperation for a livable life was not a factor. We have lands; trillionaires could share some wealth. We will all be living much simpler, less cluttered lives soon enough due to climate change. Consumerism is going out. Why not replace it with humanity and compassion for our fellow man. Thank you, Daniel. Great subject and article for this day in American History.

Judith, I greatly appreciate the response. Yes, the “immigration issue” has become a real problem, and when I saw this early this morning about “this day in history” I had to write about it.

Yes, these immigrants are coming into our country, and have been for decades, doing the hand, hard, labor that the more privileged here in this country don’t want to do, or are above doing. I mean, we had a president that has had everything in his life handed to him. He’s never worked any type of job his entire life, nor served in any branch of the Armed Forces. Unlike these ‘immigrants’ who come into this country seeking asylum and becoming citizens. How many are currently serving in the military? How many are factory workers, work on farms, or, work in just about every field available we have in this country?

Like you, the talk the Trumpublicans are giving about all the immigrants crossing the border with all the guns, drugs, and are criminals from the prisons in South America and Cuba. I have yet to see proof! They are all talk, no proof, just like everything they have been trying to do since January 20th this year. They have accomplished absolutely nothing. Nothing! And they won’t either, except wasting our tax dollars getting paid!

Excellence Daniel , just a wonderful learning example what good intents CAN DO.

We all know there’s an immigration problem, and those that speak the harshest are going in the wrong direction ...like this is news, right? But...

Think about it...such greatness have come from them , those immigrants ....SO...why can’t we find the issues , the SOLUTIONS. ...that TOGETHERNESS idea...bring forth the needy and down trodden let us feed and nurture...let us pool our knowledge and find the common ground, the fertile solution where sustenance will grow new and better , cultivate the vast riches so many are kept from . Their countries are led by despots, being destroyed by despots, who lie with promises ,smiling in their intent to conquer and control.

We. CAN. Change. This. For. All.

💙💙VOTE💙💙

You have nailed it, Patricia. Instead of yelling “close the borders”, we should be standing with open arms and inviting these immigrants into our country, as our forefathers did.

A lot of good can come of this. A lot of learning. Yes, we will get bad people in the bunch. There’s bad apples in every bushel. The secret is, after you get that bushel in your home, if you let it sit, the entire bushel eventually will go bad. But, if you go through it immediately and cull out the ‘bad apples’, then the bushel will be great!

This exact aspect works the same with this immigration issue. And, I feel that it can be solved really easily. Instead of spending billions upon billions on a ridiculous wall across the southern border of our country, which will do no good whatsoever even after it’s built, why not send the exact same amount, or maybe even less, building an “Ellis Island” type of immigration intake facility at several locations on the southern border, and different ports around the country. Then allocate the money to man these facilities with good, trained, qualified, border patrol officers, and intake personnel to screen the individuals as they enter the country by foot, boat, plane, train, however.

This, to me, makes a hell of a lot more sense than what this nation has done the last 6 years with its immigration policies, and the treatment of the immigrants that have attempted to enter this country and been treated like shit. Having their children taken away from them, housed in cramped up tents in totally unsanitary situations, being deported because they aren’t “American” and their children left here with total strangers, or living together in camps.

This is the type of stuff the Nazi’s and Communists did back in the World Wars!

For Gods sake, is this country truly turning into a communist nation?

Things need to change, and the only ones that can change it is us. We MUST 💙💙💙💙VOTE BLUE 💙💙💙💙 in EVERY single election between now and 2030, at least! This GQP-Trumputin Party has GOT to be eliminated!!! We cannot stand another administration like the past administration, and we cannot tolerate another leadership of the House of Representatives like this one.

We have got to fix this!!!

Aloha🌺Patricia, i just want to say I LOVE YOU for your compassion and understanding for human suffering at the hands of brutal dictators in our nextdoor neighbors south of the border. These Mexican citizens originally lived in the now USA. They lived harmoniously w/Native Americans and many have Native American DNA. They were ill treated and slaughtered along w/Native Americans by the invading Europeans. Survivors then pushed out of their own habitat and their land stolen. And now they are considered “immigrants”? All of us not Native American and/or Mexican are the true “immigrants” here. Thank you for empathy, understanding and having a voice for advocating the inclusion of our brethren south of the border which to them will be coming back home. This nation was their home until pushed out. And American politics aided and abetted in installing & helping the brutal dictators south of the border that are now causing human suffering to citizens. I don’t think Americans realize that because of lies perpetrating and wrongly identifying these folks as criminals. They are not as a whole. Just as we have American criminals but not as a whole. Just like everywhere there will be a few bad ones, right? Mahalo so much.

Ohhh. Okay. I should have split it in half. Maybe the intro, the thought behind the construction, and construction. Then came back a short time later with another intro, the completion, and dedication.

I kinda like Diane’s idea. I hadn’t thought of that, and to be honest, I’ve been researching, writing, thinking, on this one most all day. So, splitting it into two different post might have been interesting. I’m thinking it would give me a chance to put more emphasis on what I was trying to say. I’m not sure my point really came across in this one.

So do another; plenty of time. This was excellent. And true that shorter posts get more “reads”. Someone said in comments elsewhere acronym TLTR ? or something like that. Point was “too long to read.” I plead guilty to TMI. Sometimes delete and do over.

It’s well-done, Daniel. I guess I read whole articles, but too many readers read a few paragraphs and hit like though they don’t finish it.

Aloha🌺I agree w: “write the way that suits you.” We’re all used to “long reads “ . I like your style just fine. It’s so called “long”because it’s an in depth read. I ‘ve read plenty here and it seems you’re not the only one w/in depth “long” reads. No need chop it up. You are writing for readers not other writers, right? Well i’m only one reader here and I love all your work just fine. Mahalo so much.
